paul ryan is here. we've seen members of his family but what a roller-coaster ride for his supporters, for his donors in this hall tonight. there was such a sense of defeat initially when fox news called ohio for barack obama, but then karl rove came on, started hedging, said it still was in play and people flooded the room and cheers went out handing o out american flags but as the math sunk in all that desflated and have seen children crying and a lot of hugs here tonight as they come to grips with the end of a hard-fought campaign. >> okay, bill weir, thank you very much. i want to go back to cokie roberts as jon karl was saying talking about nancy pelosi, the end of if she, indeed, does choose to retire as the democratic leader, the end of some career. >> an incredible career. she came to congress and having been told by the congresswoman who she replaced on her deathbed she said, nancy, you run for this seat and she did and, of course, rose in the ranks in the house and put together a remarkable majority for a period there and as the first female speaker, you know, you forget tha

: half of wisconsin voters have a favorable opinion of paul ryan, it was not enough to give romney a win. he lost his home state. >> brian: that was a dominant win in wisconsin. >> steve: despite the push in pennsylvania. voters gave the 20 electoral vote to president obama. >> brian: what happened to dead heat and too close to call. pennsylvania, president obama got out in front and never let go. we have long. john roberts is with mitt romney in headquarters and phil keatings in florida, keeping phil up all night. starting with wendall. happy people? >> not much change. president has faur more year slightly larger majority in senate and republicans still control the house . two parties still have to come up with a budget deal to avoid tax hikes and spending cuts. president obama is relected with the highest unemployment rate of 7 seven.9 percent. it was held here in the mccormic center. it was still a party and a lot earlier than had feared. the president thanked romney and paul ryan for a hard fought campaign. >> i have listened to you and i are learned from you and you can made me a b

. >> the seniors point is important because paul ryan was hammered over and over again about his medicare plan but romney did well with senior as cross the board. >> we'll take a break. thank you so much, cokie, ron. when we come back, 172 electoral votes are coming in as polling places close. >> announcer: this is an abc news special, "your voice, your vote," election night 2012 live from abc news election night headquarters in times square, new york, now reporting, diane sawyer and george stephanopoulos. >> and we are back and a big crossroads, 172 electoral votes in the polls that just closed including florida and new hampshire but it is, of course, very early but i want to run through for you right now what we are ready to project, the abc news decision desk based on exit polling is ready to project that barack obama, the president, has won in illinois, of course, it's his home state, 60% of the vote last time. in massachusetts, president obama has won there, it's a solid blue state, george. >> no question about it. mitt romney's home state but did not win it and also, diane, a key senate

oklahoma republican tom cole, what does he think about mitt romney and paul ryan losing this election? his take away is this. the paul ryan budget passed a pretty big test. we had to run around the country and defend it. the ryan budget proved itself a viable platform on which to run and be reelected. wow. just to reiterate, this is what happened on election night. how does this constitute the ryan budget passing a big test. it took a big test but it did not pass that test, two very deficit things. the lesson of this election for republicans appears to be all that stuff we ran on, it totally worked. think about what determines what the republican party does next. what determines how they fix their political problems. the question of who is going to be the new face of the republican party and how they will course correct after this disastrously bad election for them, it all depends how they assess what just went wrong and why it went so wrong. what do they think their problem is that caused the country to reject them so emphatically in 2012. the signs how their self-assessment is going so f

's paul ryan on the urban vote. let's listen to paul ryan and his looking at this whole ethnic, or urban vote he calls it. >> we were surprised with the outcome. we knew this was going to be a close race. we thought we had a very good chance of winning it. i think the surprise was some of the turnout. some of the turnout in especially urban areas which definitely gave president obama the big margin to win this race. >> you know, ashley, they got to get their accusations straight. somebody on -- one of the leaders of the republican party out there in wisconsin said all the votes were fraudulent votes, they were all stolen. and now he's out there, the presidential candidate, saying they were all bought. and now this guy is -- i have to say to paul ryan, he was just surprised they showed up. he hasn't quite figured out the motive yet. >> i think the romney campaign obviously didn't take into account the huge turnout that the president got. that was one of the problems with their polling. >> is that why they're looking for new explanations? >> i mean, i think they're truly struggling to expl

by spread of 44% to 37%. paul ryan is back in the state. that is a must win for the republicans in early voting. the democrats are up there as well. obama superior organization here in the state is helping him out at this point. republican national committee has expressed concern about voting fraud here in the state. they sent a letter to the secretary of state who responded to those concerns. but over late last week, a woman was arrested here for trying to vote twice. as it turns out, she was a republican. it's no the clear who she was trying to vote for. they're making -- taking every precaution possible to assure the voters that the voting machines here are safe and that the vote will go well here. john? >> all right. thanks, miguel live on the vegas strip. now to wisconsin, where president obama holds the first of three rallies today. now wisconsin's voted blue since 1984. some of the margins are razor thin. john kerry won by 11,000 votes in 2004. al gore by less than 6,000. and the romney campaign hopes that with native son paul ryan on the ticket they can take it back. i'm joined b

congratulated him and paul ryan on a hard-fought campaign. we may have battled fiercely, but it's only because we love this country deeply and we care so strongly about its future. from george to lenore to their son mitt, the romney family has chose tone give back to americans through public service. that is their legacy that we honor and applaud tonight. [cheering] >> word also that governor romney spoke by phone with the president to congratulate him on the victory. then the former g.o.p. challenger graciously accepted defeat before a crowd of his own supporters, that were gathered outside his campaign headquarters in boston. >> i have just called president obama to congratulate him on his victory, his supporters and his campaign also deserve congratulations. i wish all of them well. but particularly the president, the first lady and their daughters. this is a time of great challenges for america. and i pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation. >> paul ryan will return to washington, not as the next vice-president. but he did win re-election to the congressional seat

hampshire michigan, nevada, wisconsin! paul ryan said home state. >> paul ryan who? >> bill: i know. and of course, ohio! right! and then. >> got my ohio state hat on. >> bill: north carolina, sadly went to mitt romney, and that's a battleground state he won. florida is still -- don't know where we came out. >> too close to call. >> bill: the president last night stepping on stage at the mccormick center, first thing he did was salute. there were three people that really helped. bill clinton for sure. joe biden for sure and michelle obama. >> michelle, i have never loved you more, i have never been prouder that watch the rest of america fall in love with you too, as our nation's first lady. [ cheers and applause ] >> bill: a great moment there. the president saying last night listen i have not maybe been the perfect president. he always says that, but i was listening to what you wanted me to do and i tried to do my best. >> obama: whether i earned our vote or not, i have listened to you. i have learned from you and you've made me a better president. >> bill: and just jump in here to

state university. tonight mitt romney and paul ryan will be joined by their wives on the campaign trail, in westchester, ohio. also joining them is condoleezza rice and senator john mccain. that is at 7:30 on c-span. the amount we have to create an environment that our small businesses can thrive. when we look at the uniqueness on the border different from the reform metered -- needed, we need comprehensive immigration reform. we have a work force problem because of our immigration system is broken. we cannot get workers to go back and forth. these problems create an impediment to commerce. we have to provide a workforce that can move back and forth easily, and now we cannot do that because of the impediments that are there by not having an effective immigration policy. that becomes an economic issue. >> some of the issues have to do with what was raised here with regard to be near the border, seasonal work that comes on, and being susceptible to a national trend when it comes to the economy. we need to do things desperately yuma. yuma, one thing we have to avoid is the sequestration th

didn't win. mitt romney-paul ryan were terrific leaders and decent people. we go to election and the polls even. hand it to the president. he did a great job getting out of with the voter and closing argument had undecided many go his way. we salute that. but yes, i'm pleased that the bright light last night. we won eight of the 11 congressional seats in virginia. and we pick up another republican governor. so we have 30 republican governors. 60% now. around the country. that is a good sign. >> bret: there is instro spection. if you look at the coalition the president put together, the latino vote. exit polls. it went up from 2008 to 2012. voted for president obama. the youth vote went up from 2008 to 2012 from 18 to 19%. the female vote gender gap was significant for the president. the gender gap is significant. do the republicans have to do more on those fronts? >> yes. i thought the message was good on jobs and the economy. deficit reduction, energy independence, protecting the military. the right issue. but winning is the combination of the right tone to bring as many peo

neutral publicly but considers a royal ally and congressman paul ryan who is supporting price. last night ryan responded to boehner's memorable line about whether ryan may step up and lead the republican party. >> i wouldn't think so. paul ryan is a policy -- >> i take that as a great compliment from john. i've been one of the house policy wonks. my role is to continue to be a champion of ideas. >> conservative blogger eric erickson is among those who think ryan should step up. he wrote in his influential blog, quote, john boehner has been willing to throw his conference under the bus repeatedly. house republicans should think very carefully if the faux tan face of john boehner is the face they want for their party the next two years. they should consider paul ryan as their speaker. that is ideological shots fired, if you will. and finally in a few minutes we do expect to hear from which party maine senator elect angus king will caucus with. interestingly enough we know of no one-on-one meetings. this is exactly what everyone has assumed the entire time that he will caucus with the democr

is the fact paul ryan had a b-plan to stay in his spot. what does it mean for him moving forward? >> paul ryan continues to be the chairman of the house budget committee which matters. because of the fiscal cliff. and because of the fy-13 or 2013 appropriations which have now been moved to next year. how much of a player does he make himself? is he going to be at the table at the white house like he was in august of 2011 when he very much pushed back against the white house and the rhetoric? he will be way more than a big player. but i think he may not try to be in your face as you might expect. >> expect him to talk about the fiscal cliff today. do you buy it? >> i like speaker boehner. he's old school. but i think he has a caucus biting at his heels. i don't know that he'll do that or won't. >> great to have you here. thank you so much. >>> something to keep you up to speed on because we are watching it. this possibility of a nor'easter adding insult to injury on the eastern seaboard. now bracing for this bad weather. today this storm could dump up to a foot of snow and bring more flooding t

. >> this is a puzzle about how he played his cards. he picked paul ryan, who has big ideas -- and this appetite -- it can be sated. he will get a lot of cred from the voters pavillion. instead you get the worst of both worlds. you get whatever criticism there was. and they use him like tim pawlenty. aey haven't talked about single tough choice. >> for the c-span audience, one question from earlier -- there are two big questions. i am not convinced. one question, why did mitt romney not pivot to the center, as he did in denver in the debate, why didn't he do that in april. that was the time to make the shift. the obama team forecast their strategy. >> the reason was -- you wrote brilliantly about it. until the convention, the campaign they ran was not good until the convention. they wasted money in not buying adds earlier. he could have moved to the middle. the republicans didn't think they could win and would have taken any transition. and an email from northern chile -- what impact will latino voters have? you bring a lot about immigration reform. >> new mexico wasn't in play. it went automati

and paul ryan had won, they'd say they have a mandate r for imposing the ryan romney budget. the president talked about this issue. he says we need to ask higher income individuals to pay more to generate revenue, as part of the solution. part of the solution along with cuts, to reducing the deficit, so it's not as if this hasn't been an important part of the campaign argument. so we'll have to see how this goes. >> i'll look forward the to talking to you more about it. you know what investors are telling me, you got to go about four times bigger. >> i think the framework of the bipartisan commission is right and it would be great if our republican colleagues would adopt that. people like grover norquist have said that's just a subterfuge to raise taxes on the american people when in fact, it's a balanced approach to getting the job done. >> still to come, the keys to victory. how the president won and the voters who turned against the republican party. tonight, there are warning signs for both sides. john king at the magic wall. the man does not sleep. he is back. plus, after last night,

congratulated him and paul ryan on a hard fought campaign. >> reporter: with the 2012 election barely in the rearview mirror, we're already thinking about the next road to the white house. marco rubio heads to iowa next weekend to headline a republican event. does the popular gop senator from florida have designs on running for the next republican nomination? a source close to rubio says that kind of talk is way too premature. but ads about the state that kicks off the presidential caucus and primary calendar, it's always good to have friends in iowa. rubio is just one name in a large list of republicans who may consider runs for the white house. they include governors chris christie of new jersey, bob mcdonald and scott walker of wisconsin, ran paul of kentucky and john thune of south dakota, jeb bush of florida, former senator rick santorum who battled mitt romney deep into the primary, former governor mike huckabee who ran for president four years ago and the past two republican running mates, congressman paul ryan and former alaska governor sarah palin. as for the democrats, the v

in "the wisconsin state journal." observers say paul ryan now a front-runner for the 2016 gop nomination. tell me we're not already talking about 2016. >> let the race begin. of course, we're keeping our eye on another big story as well this morning. can you probably see the flags moving pretty briskly behind us. that is a sign of what's to come as nasty weather, a nor'easter bears down on already storm-ravaged parts of this east coast. al is live along the new jersey shore with what we can expect. >> all right. we want to get right to our top story, the election results. nbc's kristen welker had a late night covering president obama's campaign, and she joins us this morning from chicago. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, savannah. well, president obama is waking up as a two-term president. a lot of people said it wouldn't be possible because of the stagnant economy, but he was able to rally his core constituents, women, african-americans, young voters works turned out in force to send him back to the white house. a triumphant president obama walked out to a

and a presidency littered with broken promises. >> reporter: romney's running mate, paul ryan, who's largely stayed out of the spotlight in the final days of the campaign, has started to ratchet up the rhetoric. on a conference call with religious conservatives, ryan warned the president is leading the nation down a path that grows government, restricts freedom and liberty and compromises those values that made us such a great and exceptional nation. a campaign spokesman said ryan was talking about religious liberty and obama care, topics he has mentioned frequently during the campaign. and there is no rest for this campaign. mitt romney will wrap up his night tonight where his campaign began, in new hampshire, at an event where kid rock will be performing. then he gets up in the morning with his wife, ann, and goes to vote near his home in massachusetts. then it's off to those election day stops in ohio and pennsylvania. i talked to a senior romney adviser about those stops. they will not be big campaign rallies. he's going to be thanking his supporters and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to

, not enough information to make a call. this is where mitt romney found his running mate in paul ryan. thought that would do the trick. it hasn't yet. >> it hasn't done the trick. but this is a state that hasn't gone republican since 1984 when ronald reagan won their handily. in 2004, george w. bush did try and turn wisconsin republican, he almost did it. it has been democrat for obama in the l.a.x. election by 14 points. but republicans wanted to make wisconsin part of the battleground as a fail safe against ohio. >> that was not really a battleground state for all practical purposes until governor romney put paul ryan on to the ticket and this moved it into the uncertain column but i think it would be a real surprise to most observers, independent observers if somehow mitt romney won that state. it's just a democratic state. what has it gone last six presidential elections democrats have won out there. >> pelley: and paul ryan's not particularly well known throughout the state. he's a congressman from the first congressional district and beyond that the folks in wisconsin don't know him well

is a colleague of congressman paul ryan. >> paul ryan is on the ballot because he was not willing to go into the game, and we do not know what will happen with his local scene. he is trying to retain his congressional seat. we sought an unreal crackdown on the rights of workers to collective bargaining to organize the state of wisconsin. you have people who suffered tremendously. as i said earlier, both of my parents were nurses. the war on organized labor in the state of wisconsin has massive impact on the rest of the nation, so i think the idea that tammy baldwin won this race instead of tommy thompson really represents a push back, largely from organized labor and working people that have really taken it on the chin by scott walker and under the broader policies of the obama administration, it has been a one-two punch, but this is a real push back for labor. for tammy baldwin, an openly gay woman who has been very outspoken on social issues and national security i think is a pretty big step forward. tommy thompson would have been like going to the stone age in a lot of ways. >> we ar

differently. there rummy and paul ryan are good man and the leaders. i want to wish them and their families well. the american people have spoken. they have reelected president obama and they have reelected the putt -- a republican majority. there is a mandate in yesterday's results and a mandate to find a way to work together on the solutions to the challenges will face as a nation. a message today is not one of confrontation but one of conviction. in the weeks and months ahead we face a series of tremendous challenges and opportunities. there is the fiscal cliff. a combination of spending cuts and tax increases mandated by law. congress will be asked to raise the nation's debt ceiling. legislation will be needed to keep the government running as a continuing resolution under which we are currently operating. amid this short-term hurdles we face the greatest challenge of all. a massive debt that is smothering growth and exceeding the entire size of our economy. there will be many who will say that we should confront the first of these challenges by letting the tax rates expire and pushing

campaign went in there and they've been challenging hard. >> the home state of paul ryan, the vice presidential nominee on the republican side so it's a blow for the republicans. >> it came into play when he was the nominee and it means absolutely... i think it means absolutely romney has to carry ohio. if he didn't carry ohio he could get through the 270 through wisconsin and colorado. if he doesn't have wisconsin, that makes ohio even more important for him. >> yes, even though wisconsin has been consistently democratic it was carried by 5,000 votes by al gore and 10,000 votes by john kerry. i mean itas very, very close. so this is a real plus for the obama folks and a real roadblock because in view of scott walker's emergence and dominance of that state as the governor not simply winning the governorship but then beating back the recall efforts so effectively as he did... >> ifill: remember when we were at the republican national convention the most popular people in the room, the most population delegation, reince priebus beings every time the name wisconsin came up because of

would take us backwards. >> what about the guy that looks like dracula? >> she means paul ryan. >> sharon osbourne's double m t mastectomy announcement today. >> i wasn't diagnosed with breast cancer. >> why she made the decision to have surgery,

. the president won by six points in iowa. he beat romney by seven in wisconsin. native son paul ryan did not ultimately make ryan really that much more competitive there and then the president won out west narrowly winning in colorado and, of course, he won by what we expected, a fairly wide margin in the state of nevada. he beat romney by five points in new hampshire, the state romney's family spends his summers. late last night virginia was called in the president's favor. and more than hurricane sandy, the employment rate, or even the auto bailout what proved decisive was cold, hard demographics. as the obama campaign predicted more than a year ago the white portion of the electorate would drop and it dropped from 74% to 72% in 2012. the president may have won just 39% of white voters but he carried nearly eight in ten nonwhite voters including a whopping 93% of african-americans. 71% of had a tinos, and 73% of asian voters. and despite all the predictions young voters wouldn't turn out, they made up a higher percentage of the electorate than they did four years ago. that's right. a h

in chief aura. >> there is an important role that the federal government plays. romney and paul ryan talked about the government needs to get out of the way. >> romney specifically said he would cut fema. >> the last thing people want when catastrophe strikes is the government to get out of the way. >> some people remember obama came in in the middle of a crisis and he was cool headed. they were reminded that this guy doesn't react as much emotionally as we like to saee, when a crisis hits, he is the guy we would like to see. >> over here to your stage right. hi. what will be president obama's 3 legacy initiatives? what luck willie have getting those through to the congress? two.ll teaake an interview with "the des moines register." he talked about immigration. he can get that done if he plays his cards right. he thought he could get a grand bargain. that will be harder to have a balanced approach to fighting what is -- that is two. >> i would think a third legacy would be a health-care. republicans have been saying all these things are going to happen under obamacare. now was on the eviden

for the romney camp. one small consulation, perhaps the vice presidential candidate paul ryan did win re-election to his congressional seat in wisconsin. in boston, laura anthony, abc news. >> thank you. >>> as you can imagine leading democrats aren newsed about sending -- are newsed about sending obama back to the what house for four more years. >> here is what people had to say about the obama victory. >> now it is up to the republicans in the congress whether they want to meet him halfway and get some things done . their whole game plan for four years was to make sure president obama wasn't re-elected. the people have spoken. they have spoken overwhelmingly. >> this election was about the failure of republicans at the national level to win the prosperity argument. the notion of tax cuts for the economy is economically wrong, but republicans have failed to make the case on how to bring the economy back through the private enterprise system. >> he had a great record. he saved us from a near depression, rescued the auto industry, got rid of osama bin laden, passed health care. i think th

i am going to say. i think that mr. romney choosing paul ryan made the decision for me. the tea party overstepped their bounds. the overstepped. i couldn't allow that to happen to america. i love my country. it just went too far. for 10 years of president reagan opposed the administration there were still blaming jimmy carter for everything. historically, president obama things. bush for a famou the tea party overstepped with the nazi staff, the socialism, wanting to totally destroy everything that people fought in world war two, a vietnam and korea for. host: you are calling on the independent line, who did you vote for? caller: i thought i had a choice, and up voting for obama. i did not vote until almost 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon because i hadn't made up my mind. host: for him did you vote in 2008. caller: i voted for the libertarian candidate. host: what to do in ohio? caller: i am a casino worker. host: where is studenville? caller: right across the ohio river across from west virginia about 45 events west of pittsburgh. host: thank you for calling in to c-span and this

, and remember when paul ryan after the 2010 elections, he was an icon for them, came back to the freshmen and said we cannot do the budget cuts we promised you right now. they threw him out of the room. they are not 6 " to be eager to do that. you can gain significant leverage by moving in that direction, and it would not surprise me that obama has a couple of cards up his sleeve to turn the bully pulpit into a more potent weapon in the next month. >> there are other ways of doing that. one is i think he will have simpson and bowles by his side on this. he has already committed to using that as the framework. there is evidence around that the white house has been working on revisions to that, giving it some specifics that would make it palatable to him and to most democrats as well, and there is also an effort to begin to pull out some major figures in the business community to be at his side. he would not go off the cliff without first having demonstrated what an agreement with book like -- would look like, and having it will support, including potentially some senate republicans with hi

of 43 years. >> she would have been a wonderful first lady. >> reporter: today, paul ryan who was elected to the house and will have a much bigger voice, released a statement. i am very proud of the campaign we ran and am grateful to romney for the honor of being his running mate. hours later as results poured in and excitement drained from the election night ballroom, aides cut to the giant screens, cueing the band to play. and today, one of mr. romney's top surrogates, new jersey governor chris christie spoke to his fellow republican. >> i was extraordinarily disappointed last night. i was surprised, you know, that it ended as quickly as it did. but it is the way it goes, people decide elections. >> reporter: another put it more succinctly, putting it this way, this one stinks. and as governor romney left his headquarters, he was there wrapping up a good-bye meeting with his staff. now wrapping up the headquarters for possibly the wrong time. >> peter, thank you, and lester holt is here with us in the studio after we all went through this long night with a look at how the ob

! >> bill: that's the message. >> i'm actually getting news in my ear that paul ryan is claiming he will complete election day in just shy of three hours. [ laughter ] >> bill: paul who? we haven't heard much about paul ryan. >> you know, bill, you've been in this game a long time. when you are not a popular candidate on the ticket, they tend to put you in like you're only doing radio and television interviews in the states with no actual media exposure. they're not even doing that with him anymore. he would be lucky if he ended up on a hamm radio in riverside california. >> bill: i think he's still trick or treating with his daughter. >> he dressed as eddie munster. it is not a halloween costume. >> bill: judd legum will be joining us from think progress. we'll be talking to senator tom harkin from the key swing state of iowa. president obama out there again day before yesterday i think. if anybody could deliver iowa, it is barack obama or tom harkin. >> they can't do it without your vote. >> bill: exactly. so i

and for this great nation. >> and in a matter of minutes, it was all over. romney and his running mate paul ryan and their families exiting the political stage. the pictures and the imagery kind of said it all. back to you guys. >> hampton, thank you very much. we go from the white house to capitol hill. the balance of power stays the same in congress. eamon joins us now for that side of the story. >> democrats needed 25 seats to take over the house of representatives. they didn't get there. i think we've got a graphic here that will show what the spread was in the house. and you look at that, you see the democrats had a long way to go. 197, 238. and look at the senate. in the senate, republicans were hoping going into the night that they might be able to get four pickups in the end of the day, we looked at a democrat-plus two situation. two independents, angus king, the independent who was elected last night from the state of maine, has not said which party he'll caucus with. in the end, it won't make the difference in the balance of control in the senate. we're expecting that he'll caucus with

eastwood episode. did not change a lot of minds. the selection of paul ryan was a pretty strong selection. he turned out to be a very strong campaigner. i think he certainly please the conservative base. on the other hand, the challenger did not win wisconsin so didn't pay off in that regard. but the first debate absolutely did pay off. romney came in very well prepared for a lot of people who predisposed to not like him, he came off as presidential, very smart, very comfortable with himself, and clearly it was obvious that the president had prepared for the wrong debate. he clearly had prepared for romney to take a host of positions that he did not push forward in that first debate. romney had his chance for a comeback. he just was not able to keep it going in the debates that followed. now, three quick and narratives that turned out to be true about the american public. one is a think americans want to be hopeful. during an election like this, they want to be inspired to want to be told the world can be better. this is the main reason obama was elected the first time around. it was a lo

paul ryan for all that he has done for our campaign. and for our country. besides my wife, ann, paul is the best choice i've ever made. and i trust that his intellect and his hard work and his commitment to principle will continue to contribute to the good of our nation. >> i want to thank my friend and partner of the last four years, america's happy warrior, the best vice president anybody could ever hope for, joe biden! >> all right. welcome back. 29 past the hour. a special post-election edition of "morning joe" live from studio 8h in rockefeller center. >> by the way, look who's here. this is huge. >> joining nous, nbc chief foreign affairs, andrea mitchell. political analyst and former chairman of the republican national committee, michael steele. and msnbc political analyst and visiting professor at nyu, former democratic congressman harold ford jr. and host of "mad money" on cnbc, jim cramer. >> and by the way, andrea mitchell, thank you guys for coming. andrea mitchell came up to me, mika, spoken like a true lawyer, she said, i believe that for you to grow your mustache, the

and behold, a week and a half later we had paul ryan. i don't think chris christie would've made a difference. but it is interesting and there has been a lot of contention that the convention culminating today between chris christie. >> chris christie is not a guy that forgets. he has a lot of pride. >> that is well said. chris christie helped president obama get reelected. it's kristy christie was part of that. >> i want to look at the real-time results. democrats are in the waning senate races. north dakota, nevada, new mexico and wisconsin. if that were to hold and a lot of those are too close to call, that means you end up with a senate that has 54 democrats and two independents. bernie sanders and angus king, the newly elected independent from the state of maine. there would be 56 senate democratic votes. mitt romney has structured a very flawed campaign you have mitt romney they say if you are your own lawyer, that's not a good idea. it is a terrible idea. they had a very inefficient structure, a confused message. dealing with a candidate. they were shocked at his first debate performan

, volunteers and supporters and says beside choosing his wife ann, picking paul ryan as a runningmate was the best decision he has ever made. ron, paula. rob, paula. >> thanks, brandi. >>> democrats have strengthened their control of the senate. the races which changed hand are in indiana and massachusetts. an independent has been elected in maine to succeed retired senator olympia snow. >> one of the closely watched most expensive races there. spending $68 million. >> elizabeth warren, a law professor and former obama administration adviser, she swept scott brown from office and vowed to fight for the middle-class. >> for every family that has been chipped and squeezed and hammered, we are going to fight for a level playing field and we are going to put people back to work. >> warren becomes the first woman elected to the senate from the state of massachusetts. >> she takes ted kennedy's seat back from scott brown, turns it blue again. democrats spent a lot on that race. trying to carve her out as a national figure. you will hear a lot from elizabeth warren. >> record number of women

loser. the same can be said for paul ryan. the president should get credit for achieving record-breaking turn out areas from urban areas. first, completely not true. this smacks of sore loser. getting lost in swing states rhode island, new hampshire and if ryan was using urban as a substitute for blacks, yes, he has had votes but also from other areas. romney this is bad form, the sort of thing that might sound good to conservativers, and comes across as tone deaf from just about everybody else. here are some fun fact. urban areas like janesville, wisconsin. would you like the fun facts there welcome only 37% of ryan's hometown voted for him and his running mate. 62% of the jamesville vote went to president obama. that greedy urban area of jamesville wisconsin. >> the hood. >> stephanie: yeah. enough of the failed presidential numberee. they had an enough of him a long time ago. after saying that he claims obama won due to gifts bestowed on women and minorities, romney's comments have not been well received. romney's theory is not just wrong, it's pernicious. here's hoping that

, the recriminations are immediate. people saying it was romney's fault, it was romney's fault. interesting, paul ryan issued a statement saying, polite saying thank you for the opportunity, we don't know what happens to him. but the party won't spend a lot of time fretting over him, i think. >> he ran a strong campaign. the problem he had was the democrats, especially the campaign, the obama campaign, the super pacs, over the summer, after he got the nomination, they painted him in such a negative way, that strategy of hammering away at bain capital, the swiss bank accounts, the cayman islands and the 47% tape came out, that controversial tape, it really hurt him. he did well in the first debate, almost recovered, got it close, got to give him some credit, but that negative attack on him, it really was successful when all -- negative politics sometimes works. >> sure does. and in some i was hways it has harder for him today. let's turn our attention on the governing challenge. the most popular member of the obama cabinet is the secretary of state hillary clinton. she has given hints she might stay on

for granted. they've learned from the past and as you know this is the home state of paul ryan. precious time to be expending on a traditional blue state at the end. the president is cross crossing the nation going is from ohio to virginia to florida to colorado back and forth across the battleground states in the final hours. and part of the message is countering the message you hear from romney. governor romney says he will bring big change, the president arguing he is the only one who can carry that banner. listen to this. >> you may not agree with every decision i've made. sometimes you may have been frustrated by the pace of change. but, you know where i stand. you know what i believe. you know i mean what i say and i say what i mean. >> and wolf, part of his argument there as well as he's an honest person that voters can trust. something interesting i'll tell you, you might be able to tell over my shoulder, a comparatively small crowd here. they've been mixing it up. the one in wisconsin 20,000 people, according to law enforcement officials there. this one significantly smaller. where e
